After her father is killed for being a traitor, fourteen-year-old Lady Mary, who is a ward of Lord and Lady Macbeth, is sent to the scullery, where she works as a maid and uncovers the couple's secret plans.
The Brown Bag Book Club met on Wednesday, March 20. We read and discussed Enter Three Witches, an historical fiction novel based on Shakespeare's Macbeth and written by Caroline Cooney. Students who read the featured book were invited to bring along a friend, even if that person hadn't read the book. Together we enjoyed good conversation, lunch, soda, pretzels, candy and more. We gave away several copies of the book, and two grand prizes consisting of gift certificates to Barnes and Noble. Our grand prize winners were Trevor and Tarren, both 8th graders,
We extend a big thank-you to the PTSA for again providing the funds to purchase several copies of the featured book. For our next Brown Bag Book Club, we will read one of the following Science Fiction or Fantasy titles : Awakening by Carroll, 2007; Epic by Kostick, 2007; Everlost by Shusterman, 2007; Gone by Grant, 2008; Heir Apparent by Vande Velde, 2002; House of Scorpions by Farmer, 2002; Life as We Knew It by Pfeffer, 2006; or Mysterious Benedict Society by Stewart, 2007.

Brown Bag Book Club Begins with a Bang
At the beginning of eighth grade, Max, who has a learning disability, and his new friend Freak, whose birth defect has affected his body but not his brilliant mind, find that when they combine forces they make a powerful team.
Everyone who attended OHMS’s first ever Brown Bag Book Club had a great time. We met during lunches on Wednesday, January 14, 2009, to talk about Freak the Mighty, a novel by Rodman Philbrick about an unlikely friendship between two middle-school boys. We enjoyed lunch and conversation, and every participant walked away with candy and at least one new book. Our grand prize winners were Jonas, a 9th grader, and Elizabeth, an 8th grader.
We extend a big thank-you to the PTSA for their donation to purchase multiple copies of our featured book, and to our OHMS counselors, Ms. Groot and Ms. Cannon, for their support throughout the process and their willingness to provide soda and raffle prizes for our meetings. We also want to acknowledge our OHMS Library Media Specialist, Ms. Foster, for taking a leadership role in organizing and facilitating the Book Club.
For our next Brown Bag Book Club, we will feature an historical fiction that was written within the past five years, is available as a paperback, and features a girl protagonist. Our Book Club participants are helping narrow the selection from nine possibilities to one. Our final choice will be announced on February 2 and our next Book Club meeting will be on Wednesday, March 18, during lunches. We hope to have 20-30 students participate each lunch. Anyone interested can sign up in the Library Media Center on a first-come-first-serve basis starting February 2. See you there!
